Mustang sophomore Terrell Armstead scored 12 points and junior’s Adebowale Olasokan and Dodrick Spencer combined for 21 points in the team’s 69-54 victory over the Purchase College Panthers Sunday, February 11, 2007 at Morrisville’s STUAC gymnasium.

“I feel that although we have no post season this year, it is important to finish strong and win the last few games,” said Morrisville Head Coach Brian Murphy. “We know that we will be able to compete in the SUNYAC next year if things continue to improve.”

The Mustangs, who were coming off a 60-57 loss to reigning SUNYAC champion SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday, seemed to score at will Sunday afternoon against Purchase, winning their sixth game of the season, three of which came at home.

Morrisville lead the game at the half 30-24 and never looked back, outscoring the Panthers 39-28 in the second half.

With 5:52 remaining in the game, Mustang Garnell Vaughn put an exclamation point on the victory with a monstrous dunk.

Panther guard Justin Walters was essentially the only offensive figure for his team the entire afternoon. He scored 25 points in the game while the rest of his team combined for just 31.

Walters and the Panthers could creep no closer than its six point deficit at half-time.

The Mustangs have been on the losing side of close games all season long, but have shown a sort of togetherness that their coach can be proud of. “The guys have really come together as a group and they have become smarter basketball players,” said Murphy. “Our potential in the SUNYAC will rely on the returning players working hard in the off season on the court, the weight room and in the classroom.”

Morrisville also defeated Green Mountain College by a huge 71-42 margin Thursday Feb. 15. The Mustangs final game is scheduled for next Tuesday at home against Lyndon State College.
