The Morrisville State ice hockey team defeated the GMHL All-Starts 6-3 Saturday Jan. 27. The victory marked the team’s second win in seven games since returning to action after its shortened winter break. The Mustangs other victory was captured at the Ice Plex on Jan. 16 against perennial contender SUNY Cortland. Although the game remained 0-0 throughout the first period, the Mustangs got off to a quick start in the second, when Nick Carelli scored the games first goal off an assist from teammate Keith Williams. Cortland responded with goals from both Nick Shackford and Barry McLaughlin. Morrisville found itself down by a goal at the start of the third period when Andrew Alarie knotted up the score at two a piece. Andrew Green was credited with the assist. Morrisville’s Matt Damskov scored the games fifth and final goal on a power-play with 5:19 remaining in the third period to seal the deal in the Mustang’s thrilling win over the Red Dragon’s. “It felt great beating Cortland” said Mustang’s Head Coach Earl Utter. “It was a sloppy game for both teams and I really thought the last team with the puck would win.” After defeating the Penn State Berks in consecutive games Friday, February 2 and Saturday February 3, Morrisville’s record now stands at 8-13 with two games left in the season. “As a team, I am very happy with our 8 wins,” Said Utter. “I told the boys I thought we would have 10 wins this season. We need to win our last two games to reach that mark.” The Mustangs will wrap up their season with a pair of away games against Becker College on Feb. 23 and 24. |
