Everyone knows college is a time for change and development. But nowhere on this campus is this change happening fast enough. According to Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, civility is courtesy and politeness. Now that we are all on the same page here, let us begin. As we maneuver this campus, it has come to our attention that this place, your very own Morrisville State College, needs a big slap in the face! Too many things happen on this campus that simply should not be allowed. Sitting in a college classroom, you might assume that those around you are at your level and just so happen to be there to learn. Well, not here. Instead, you will find classrooms sprinkled with rude, immature, mindless teenagers. And it's not just in class: just walking around campus, or at the dining hall, you will run into some random kid screaming like an idiot, making a complete fool of him or herself without a care in the world. Mostly, these things go unnoticed because here at good old Mo’ville they are what some may consider “normal,” and are part of daily routines. Just last month, Bryce happened to see a small group of MSC students walking past a group of young children who were crossing campus. These children were on a quest to collect as much candy as humanly possible, as do most nearing Halloween. Disappointingly, the group of college students demonstrated that they were no more intelligent than this group of children. They were completely disrespectful, lacking respect for the females keeping these children in line as well as the children themselves. With foul language unimaginable to most mature adults, they seemed to have no conscience in using these words. Brittany was hurrying to class as she walked past Seneca, and was disrespected for doing NOTHING at all. This disrespect came from a group of loiterers hangin’ by the clock. Because she was in a hurry and had no time to waste, she did not respond to anything coming her way. This is where it all started. Because she said and did nothing at all, she was referred to as “that preppy white girl.” First of all, Brittany is the least “preppy” person you will ever know. And, second…not a one person hangin’ by the clock knew a thing about her or had ever spoken to her in her life. This, my friends, is where civility should have come into play. If any of these people speaking to her had a clue as to what respect is, this entire incident would never have taken place. While the two of us face the prospect of staying at Morrisville for an additional two years, we don't look forward to dealing with these problems for four more semesters. Some may consider this a foolish choice, but we enjoy the academic program and much that we do here. If the college wants to make a smooth transition to a four-year school, it should consider changing a few things, starting with the students. Or maybe it's the students themselves who need to change. |
