The Diviners, written by Jim Leonard Jr. will be this fall's college play. "Its a play I've seen before," said director Steven Hinkle. "I really liked it and I also had several very strong actors." Taking place in rural Indiana during the depression, this college theater festival winner shows a small community in which the people have very little. Although it shows the way of life of the average town people, this play mainly focuses on Buddy Layman (Bryan Williams), a young boy who almost drowned at the age of 6. During this tragic incident his mother dies while saving him, leaving his strict father Ferris Layman (Robert Bostwick) and Sister Jennie Mae (Janie Weyls) to take care of him. Buddy, now a teenager, is mentally disabled and terrified of water. Former preacher C.C Showers (Aaron Lehman), who is lost and in need of work, adds a special something to this simple play. His presence causes an uproar as the townspeople (especially women) want a preacher. He manages to catch the eye of Jennie Mae. The play will start this Friday, with show times at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The schedule repeats itself next week, with 8 p.m. shows Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 2-4. Tickets for students are $1, and the general public pays only $3. Tickets can purchased at the SGO office during regularly scheduled hours. The Diviners appears to be worth the wait. "It's funny, touching and heartwarming," Hinkle said. "I hope people like it." |
