Volleyball wins first three Div. III matches

The Mustang volleyball team picked up its first win on Sept. 11 against the SUNY Institute of Technology, then beat SIT again on Oct. 12 for its third victory.

Though the Mustangs' overall record reads 3-15, it does not do any justice to the caliber of play the team is capable of. They have shown their determination and skill in every game played, whether the end score was in their favor or not. “This is a real rebuilding year for us,” said Coach Jennifer Costello. She came to Morrisville from Medaille College, where she played four years of volleyball and served as the team captain for two years.

The Sept.11 win was a confidence-builder for everyone, a well-fought and well deserved victory. Michelle Neadom, Madison Cassidy, and Amanda Drake led the team in kills with seven each. Jessica Robinson, the starting setter had 20 successful sets. The Mustangs beat SIT in three straight sets with scores of 30-9, 30-18, 30-20.

On Sept. 23 the team recorded their second victory with a 3-0 win over Maine Machias. The scores were 30-19, 30-28, 30-19. Sarah Sulger led the team in kills with 12.

The team played St. Joseph's College on September 22 and 23 and came away with two hard-fought losses (2-3 and 1-3). The two teams were neck and neck in both games with St. Josephs pulling just ahead in the end. On the 22 they had close scores of 25-30,30-27,26-30,30-26,10-15 and on the 23 they had scores of 28-30,30-24,25-30,17-30.

The team completes its season this week at Cazenovia College on Wednesday and at Buffalo State College Thursday.
