Hillary Clinton: Should she gracefully step aside?

With the amassed winnings of Barack Obama, people are starting to wonder if Hillary Clinton should back out of this race. The primaries aren’t over, but Obama holds more votes and delegate votes than Hillary, even though she holds more super delegates. So why do so many people think that Hillary is out of the race? Though Obama clearly has more votes, Hillary’s super delegates could be enough, since the race is still not over.

People who do think that Hillary should back down, say that her staying in the race will take votes away from Obama making it easier for McCain to win. Polls on reuters.com have shown that people say if the election was today, McCain would win by a hair against both Obama and Clinton (separately). While it is known that newspaper and online polling is not exactly accurate, many give a plus or minus window for error based on polls from Yahoo news, Reuters, and Polling Report.com showing that people think McCain will win over either candidate.

The problem we are facing here is that in this race, the people that support Clinton or Obama might vote for McCain just to see that the other doesn’t win. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both feel that even though they are different they are much more alike in views than McCain.

At a rally in Fayetteville N.C. Clinton stated, “Senator Obama has intense support. I have intense support. It's exciting because people want to be involved. But, the differences ... pale in comparison to the differences between us and Senator McCain." In a very similar statement Obama stated on ABC’s “World News”, a very similar statement “There are going to be some bruised feelings, whoever the nominee is. We are going to have to come together and remind ourselves that there is a heck of a lot bigger difference between either Senator Clinton or myself, and John McCain.”

This really is a good point. I do not know if Hillary should step down. She hasn’t lost yet, and from what I’ve seen in the numbers, she really isn’t that far behind--especially considering her super delegates. Now if it meant that one would have to step down in order to beat McCain in the general election, she should be the one to do it, because she is in second place in the numbers. If she had that attitude, though, she wouldn’t be running for president now.

Hillary Clinton did not become the first woman to come this far in a presidential election by giving up, and I don’t think that she’ll start now.
