The women's lacrosse team won their first two games of the year. The ladies will take on their first SUNYAC opponent, Potsdam, at home on Tuesday, April 1.

The season started last Saturday when the team travelled to Western Connecticut State University and beat the Colonials by a score of 10-8. The ladies then stomped Maritime College the very next day by a score of 25-1.

Kayla Miller, a junior from Johnstown, NY, has been a monster so far at the attack

position; she has already netted eight goals for Morrisville and recorded two assists.

Close behind is midfielder Jennifer Caffarelli, a junior from Phillipsburg, NJ, who has seven goals and two assists on the year.

"I feel really good about this season," said sophomore midfielder Carmen Velazquez who had three goals and an assist against Maritime. Velazquez added that she thinks the team has a good mix of newcomers and veterans.

According to the Morrisville website, nine of the 18 players on the team are freshmen, while only three are seniors.

Head coach Erynn Anderson said the team will run two-a-day practices over the week of spring break to help better prepare for the season.

"The team is coming together," said the first-year coach, who formerly played three years of lacrosse at Fredonia State College.

Anderson's sentiments are shared by many of her players as well.

"We are definitely ready to let teams know Morrisville is no joke," said Stephanie Smith, a 2nd-year starter who

has recorded ten saves while tending goal this season.

"Everyone picks up their own," Smith said. "Every person is an individual leader."

Smith added that the team's main goal is to do better than the .500 record they had last year.

Being the team's first year in the SUNYAC, the ladies will have some stiff and unfamiliar competition. "We are the newcomers," Velazquez said, "and other teams will be expecting to just run us over."

Smith had a different take on the situation. "If we play as a team," she said, "we can have some big upsets."

Out of the 14 games scheduled for the Lady Mustangs this season, only five of them will be played at home.

Whether the team has an outstanding year or just another season to forget has yet to be determined, but Smith said she feels hard work and teamwork will be of great benefit to Morrisville.

"The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary," she said.
