Senator Craig Cops a Feel/Feels a Cop?
Belinda Hinckley, '09

Sen. Larry E. Craig is a Republican conservative in one of the 'reddest' states there is: Idaho.

He has voted against gay marriage and is opposed to special protection of victims of gay and lesbian hate crimes.  It’s quite ironic that the same man who is openly against homosexuality is found in an airport bathroom trying to pick up the guy in the next stall.

“ I have never been gay,” Craig stated at a recent press conference.  Of course we believe you, Senator. How unfortunate for Mr. Craig that the man in the stall beside him happened to be an undercover cop. Oops!

This man sure has nerve. News reports say he believes he’s being unfairly punished for having a wide stance and picking up a nonexistent piece of paper off the floor.  But the problem here isn’t homosexuality, the problem is the person.  His character traits include blatant liar, incompetent hypocrite, and annoyance to society. Maybe he should consider that for the personal ads?

Speaking of hypocrisy, on top of this, Sen. Craig had the audacity to harp on former president Bill Clinton. On Meet The Press, he’s said to have called him “bad, nasty and naughty” for having an affair with a woman intern and then lying about it. I’m not saying that what president Clinton did was morally right, but in the end, he admitted his wrongdoing.

Mr. Craig, it’s time to stop playing the blame game; we are no longer in kindergarten.

In addition to this hypocrisy, Craig thinks he has the right to withdraw his guilty plea. He told the press he wasn’t ready to make the decision and wasn’t given enough time to get a lawyer. This is a lie. There is recorded evidence that as soon as the police told him he had a right to a lawyer, he had a meeting with his to discuss his claim.

I believe this is just a tactic so the Republicans allow him to stay in office.  Speaking of which, Mr. Craig has apparently changed his mind about leaving his position as Senator. Craig issued a statement saying he will stay in office "for now." For now. huh? How about until the judge finds you guilty of attempting to perform illegal sex acts in an airport bathroom.

If that doesn’t embarrass his way out of office, the Republicans will find a way to humiliate him until he surrenders his 'throne'.

If Senator Larry Craig is a gay man wants to stay closeted, I have no objections.  The main problem I have with him is his hypocrisy. He has stated on many occasions that he’s100-percent anti-gay. He supported the ban of same-sex marriages. He resisted  allowing special protection of victims of gay and lesbian hate crimes. Maybe he thought the more anti gay he appeared, the less people would suspect. That, my friends, is a guilty conscience.

I believe people have a right to keep their sexual orientations private, but there’s a fine line between a secret and a lie, and Senator Craig has crossed it. He isn’t the only senator who has lied in the past, but it’s about time that society stop judging the private lives of our elected officials--and start focusing on how they vote in public.
