As I enter my second year here at Morrisville, I have noticed many things that I did not see my first year coming in. One major difference is the arrival of freshmen I did not notice before, probably since I was one. Another is the fact that some of these freshmen, namely the BOYS of this freshman class, are a bit creepy. Allow me to explain with a story: As I was sitting in my room with my roommate and one of her friends from down the hall, I heard a loud cry. “PEEPING TOM!” my roommate’s friend yelled, loud enough for all of Morrisville and its surrounding hamlets to hear. It appeared as though a boy, possibly bored with his everyday routine, had wandered over to my hall and, using the quiet seclusion of a bush, was staring through the window--about two feet from my roommate--with a disturbing grin on his face. Since he was practically IN the room with us, we quickly decided to close the blinds, hoping that this would show that we did not want him to join us. If only we could just “close the blinds” on some of these “peeping toms” in the real world. The other day I had a boy follow me for at least a half hour while I went to the library. I will not go into detail, but this boy was very persistent in his pursuit and definitely caused me to think twice about walking around by myself from that point on. Is this new breed of boys lonely? Do they need attention that only unsuspecting girls walking alone on campus can provide? And is it only this freshman class? In the first weeks of arrival this semester, I have heard creepier stalker stories than I have in a whole year here: girls being asked their phone numbers and, when declining, being followed and continuously asked until being rejected more than enough times for the askers to get the hint. Perhaps there are not enough recreational activities for boys here on campus. A boy in my math class talked animatedly about the fun time he had on the “bus trip to Wal-Mart” last week, so surely this could not be the case. With excitement like that to be involved in, what boy could ever find time to follow a girl around? Although I am not hearing anything supporting this, girls can be creepy too, I’m sure. All we can do, girls, is wait until these boys grow up. Surely men do not follow anyone around after being rejected numerous times. Meanwhile, don’t walk around campus alone--and avoid wandering into any dark alleyways. And boys, if you’re looking for a good time, consider riding a bus to Wal-Mart, where there surely are 100 thrills a minute. |
